Osijek is the hub of eastern Croatia, but it is off the main tourist track and public transport to its airport and across the region is limited. Where the coast has frequent buses and shuttles, Slavonia runs on sparser timetables, and a flight that lands at an awkward hour can leave you with a long wait or no connection at all. About Osijek

Osijek is the largest city in Slavonia, spread along the right bank of the Drava in Croatia's fertile eastern plains. Its star attraction is Tvrđa, a beautifully preserved baroque fortress quarter of cobbled squares and old barracks and churches that today holds cafés and life rather than soldiers. Along the river a long promenade and a string of green parks give the city an unhurried, spacious feel, far from the press of the coastal towns.

What sets the region apart is what lies around the city. Osijek is the base for Baranja's wine country to the north and for Kopački Rit, one of Europe's great inland wetlands where the Drava meets the Danube, alive with birds and floodplain forest. This is a quieter, greener, more agricultural Croatia of rivers and plains and vineyards, and because so much of it sits beyond easy public transport, reaching it comfortably almost always means travelling by car.
